Regarding “Energy-Savvy Tips for Rebate Seekers” by Diane Wedner, May 13: The federal government recommends 140 degrees minimum for safe dishwashing, not 120 degrees. Also, most dishwashers have an energy-saver cycle that does not dry the dishes. Just open the door at the end of the wash/rinse cycle and evaporation will handle the job.
Replacing clothes dryers every 10 years is [nonsense]. I used to service major appliances, and one of the major problems I encountered was lint buildup in the dryer door and the duct in the blower motor. If people will keep that area clean, along with the vent hose, a 10-year-old dryer will work just fine.
