From Times Wire Reports

The California Assembly voted 73 to 0 on Monday to add “state tartan” to the list of 23 official this-and-thats, including a state flag, motto, flower, dance, song--even a state fossil and soil.

Assemblywoman Helen Thomson (D-Davis) wants to designate a tartan--a brightly colored plaid cloth pattern like those used in kilts--to honor Californians of Scottish, Irish and other Celtic nationalities.

Under her bill, the California tartan would have blue, green, black and gold colors and be based on the family tartan of the famous naturalist John Muir. The measure now goes to the state Senate.
