Old Sasoon Bakery is as atmospheric as its name. It’s a small, friendly place, and you can watch the bakers at work through the window where you place orders. So relax and enjoy a chat as you choose from an interesting assortment of Middle Eastern baked goods. A round flat bread that is spread with zaatar (a mixture of thyme, sumac and sesame seeds) and oil would be eaten for breakfast with tea and olives or for a light supper, explained one woman. Triangular breks have a lemony spinach filling and the long, slim breks are stuffed with Jack and feta cheeses. If you prefer something sweet, there’s tahineh bread, a round flat bread with rich, nutty sesame flavor that would be nice with morning coffee.

Zaatar-topped flat bread (mana’ish), 60 cents; spinach-filled brek, $1; cheese-filled brek, $1.25, tahineh bread, $1 at Old Sasoon Bakery, 1132 N. Allen Ave., Pasadena. (626) 791-3280.
