Council Moves to Protect Famed Sculpture Garden

From Times Staff Reports

A famed outdoor sculpture garden would be protected for at least 50 years under a measure preliminarily approved by Costa Mesa council members this week. The ordinance forces the owners of California Scenario to apply to the council if they want to make changes to the garden, behind an El Torito Grill on Anton Boulevard.

Officials with CommonWealth Partners LLC, which owns the garden and much of the surrounding property, had been negotiating with the city for several months over who should be responsible for the garden.

Company officials are relieved that negotiations are over. The ordinance “is a real positive first step in what’s going to be a real long-term relationship,” said James R. Anderson, a partner in CommonWealth.

The council is expected to give the ordinance final approval at its June 4 meeting.
