Public Views Heard on No-Fishing Zones

Conservationists made a strong showing at a public forum about the Channel Islands this week, the first meeting since a panel deadlocked on where to locate no-fishing zones around the islands.
About 300 people attended a Wednesday night hearing in Santa Barbara, with most of those supporting large no-take zones around the islands.
Last week, a citizens group consisting of fishermen and conservationists was unable to come to a consensus on a recommendation. They presented two competing maps to an advisory council at the Wednesday hearing.
The final decision will be made by the state Fish and Game Commission. It will take into account public input from forums and the competing maps from the recommending panel.
