Thousands of Women Protest Crackdown

From Times Wire Reports

About 10,000 women marched through the streets of the capital of Algeria’s ethnic Berber region to denounce a crackdown, the latest anti-government protest in the increasingly turbulent area.

After the women’s march in Tizi Ouzou, clashes erupted between police and young men downtown near police headquarters, then spread to the outskirts of the northeastern city about 60 miles east of Algiers. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.

The march--like numerous others in recent weeks--was called to honor dozens of people who were killed by police in April riots that swept through the Berber region.
