From Times Staff Reports

The Orange County Sanitation District will hold a public workshop Saturday to discuss a controversial federal waiver that allows it to discharge higher concentrations of human waste, bacteria and other matter into the ocean than nearly every other sewer agency in the nation.

The federal Clean Water Act mandates that all sewage receive secondary treatment. However, the waiver allows the sanitation district to discharge partially treated sewage into the Pacific Ocean.

The workshop will focus on the operational, financial and regulatory aspects of the waiver. It will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. in the administration-building boardroom of the Sanitation District, 10844 Ellis Ave.
