Ruling Party Wins Large Majority in Elections

Singapore’s ruling party won a large majority in general elections but was denied a sweep of the tightly controlled city-state with two opposition lawmakers holding on to their seats.
The People’s Action Party of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong--successor to Singapore’s longtime ruler Lee Kuan Yew--received 75% of the vote, according to official final results, more than the 65% it received in 1997 elections.
Opposition leaders Chiam See Tong of the Singapore Democratic Alliance and Low Thia Khiang of the Workers’ Party held on to their seats.
