Winning Streak Leads to Marina
Laker forward Robert Horry, one of the two-time defending NBA champion team’s top players, has purchased a home in the Marina del Rey area for slightly more than $1.1 million.
The custom-built, contemporary-style house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms in about 3,700 square feet.
Built in the ‘80s, the three-story house has a dramatic floor plan with large rooms, high ceilings and many windows, glass-block walls and skylights. The home also has an elevator, three-car garage, wet bar and two fireplaces.
Horry, 31, has been with the Lakers since 1996. He played for the Houston Rockets from 1992 to 1996. The Rockets were NBA champions in ’94 and ’95.
Horry holds the NBA single-game playoff record for most three-pointers without a miss--seven in 1997. He played in 79 regular-season games last season, averaging 5.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 20.1 minutes.
He decided in June to remain with the Lakers rather than become a free agent. He will make $5.3 million in each of the next two seasons, and the Lakers hold an option for 2003-04.
Horry had considered opting out to play closer to his wife and two children in Houston, but his wife told him to play where he would be happiest, even if it meant staying in L.A., where she doesn’t want to live.
Debra Berman and Patricia Kandel, both of Coldwell Banker in Marina del Rey, had the listing, and Gina Martino of Prudential John Aaroe represented Horry, Westside real estate sources said.
Freddy DeMann, Madonna’s former manager and co-founding partner of Maverick Records, and his wife, Candy, have purchased the Bel-Air home of Nancy Daly Riordan, former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan’s wife, for $6.5 million, according to real estate sources not involved in the deal.
The mayor’s wife owned the home before they were married in 1998. The Riordans have had homes in Brentwood and Malibu.
The house purchased by the DeManns has eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms in nearly 9,000 square feet. Built in the ‘20s, the Mediterranean-style home behind gates also has a den overlooking a courtyard with a fountain, an office, basement, pool, spa, guest house and north/south tennis court.
In October, the DeManns sold their home nearby for $20 million, sources said. He left Maverick Records in 1999 and has been guiding the career of Colombian singer Shakira, whose first album in English is due out this month.
Barbara Duskin of Coldwell Banker Previews, Beverly Hills North, represented the DeManns, and June Scott of June Scott Estates, a Coldwell Banker Previews company in Beverly Hills, had the listing on the house the DeManns bought, sources said.
Televangelists Jan and Paul Crouch of the Costa Mesa-based Trinity Broadcasting Network have purchased a Newport Beach house for close to $5 million, Orange County Realtors say.
The home was described as “a palatial estate with ocean and city views.” The Crouches had been living in a smaller house in the same neighborhood.
The house they bought has six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a billiard room, a climate-controlled wine cellar, a sweeping staircase and a crystal chandelier.
The three-story, nearly 9,500-square-foot house, which has an elevator, also has a six-car garage, a tennis court and a pool with a fountain.
The house is on slightly more than an acre. Jan Crouch had been wanting a bigger yard for her dogs, sources said.
Trinity Broadcasting, established in 1973, has more than 768 TV stations on the air worldwide. The Crouches oversee a $100-million-plus-a-year enterprise. Even so, faithful viewers are said to consider the couple, who are in their 60s and have been married since the ‘50s, as everyday folks.
Former Dodgers second baseman Steve Sax has purchased a home in Del Webb’s Anthem Country Club near Las Vegas for $343,000.
Sax plans to make the home his primary residence, although he also has a retreat in Sacramento.
The three-bedroom, 2,600-square-foot home near Las Vegas has a detached room that the former major league second baseman intends to use as his office. After retiring from baseball in 1994, Sax became a baseball analyst for Fox Sports and wrote news and commentary for the Fox network’s Web site. Now he is an investment advisor for a major brokerage firm with offices in Las Vegas and Sacramento.
The single-story, updated Prairie-style house also has a pool and a spa decorated with brick as well as a type of stone naturally found in southern Nevada. The guard-gated golf community is in the foothills of the Black Mountains, a few miles south of Las Vegas.
Sax, 41, played with the Dodgers from 1981 through 1988. In 1989, he signed as a free agent with the Yankees. He then played with the White Sox before winding up a Major League career in which he played in four playoffs and two World Series.
Kristine Rogers of Realty Executives, Galleria office, represented Sax in his purchase.
Former KTLA-TV news anchor Terry Anzur has listed her home in the Pasadena foothills at about $600,000.
Anzur is moving to West Palm Beach, Fla., to anchor for CBS-affiliate WPEC-TV.
Her home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms in slightly more than 2,000 square feet. Built in 1970, the Mediterranean-style home has been extensively remodeled. It also has a family room wired for a home theater, a breakfast area, pool, spa and three-car garage.
Anzur has owned the home, on a hilltop with mountain and city views, since 1990, when she returned to Southern California as political editor and morning news anchor for KCBS-TV. She subsequently helped launch MSNBC by co-hosting “America’s Talking in Depth” with Chris Matthews in 1994.
More recently, she co-anchored KTLA’s “News at 10” with Hal Fishman from 1997 to 2000. Since then, she has been a faculty member in the School of Journalism at the USC/Annenberg School of Communication.
Mabel Agojian of Coldwell Banker’s South Lake Avenue office in Pasadena has the listing.
Michael Smith, who has designed homes for such celebrities as Cindy Crawford, Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Murdoch, has put his home in a Brentwood canyon on the market at just under $1.9 million.
“It’s a great house, but I love a project, and I’ve done all I can with this one,” Smith said.
Built in 1963, the three-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot-plus house is post-and-beam construction with glass walls. Smith created a stainless steel and cherry kitchen, and he used terra-cotta tiles and white-plastered brick walls to give an adobe effect, balancing the sleek expanses of glass. Smith calls the house “a modernistic adobe.” It also has views of the Getty Museum.
Smith recently finished decorating a Mediterranean-style home on the former Pillsbury estate in Montecito. That home is listed at $24 million with Harry Kolb at Sotheby’s in Montecito.
Smith’s home is listed with Bridget Martens at Sotheby’s, Beverly Hills.
