Terrorism Does Not Take a Holiday

Share

Asking us to defer the war against the Taliban during Ramadan is an insult to the Sept. 11 event (“Indonesia Presses U.S. to Stop Bombing,” Nov. 2). We are at war against terrorism, not a religion. The Taliban does not represent true Islam.

I do not recall the Nazis deferring the war during religious holidays. Does anybody remember deferring the Yom Kippur war during the most holy Jewish day? Why should we make an exception? We need to continue the campaign until we do the job of eliminating terrorism even as we give up our own religious holidays.

Wait a minute! The Taliban “government” has shown absolutely no tolerance for any other of the world’s religions. After destroying priceless statues of Buddha, arresting Christian welfare workers and conducting a bogus trial, why should we be concerned about the inconvenience to them if we continue to bring the war on terror home to them during Ramadan? Anthrax will continue to kill Americans during Ramadan, and probably during Christmas as well. We should dismiss the complaints of the extremists of Islam--and those who cower under them--when they cry foul.

To us, it’s a war. To them it’s a jihad--a holy cause.

Oh, pardon me!
