WASHINGTON — Strom Thurmond Jr., son of the nation’s oldest and longest-serving U.S. senator, was approved Tuesday as the top federal prosecutor in his father’s home state of South Carolina.
The nomination of Thurmond Jr., 29, to be South Carolina’s U.S. attorney was confirmed Tuesday night by voice vote in the Senate, along with those of nine other U.S. attorneys from around the nation.
Few senators were present for the vote. It was not immediately known whether Thurmond, 98, was present.
Thurmond, a former Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, recommended his son to President Bush in January. There was no serious opposition in the Senate.
The younger Thurmond is an assistant state prosecutor and a 1998 University of South Carolina Law School graduate. He has endorsements from both Republican and Democratic leaders for the job. He has no official party affiliation.
