Turkish police denied fatally shooting four protesters in a raid in Istanbul on Monday, saying the leftists died after setting themselves ablaze.

Police on Monday stormed an Istanbul neighborhood with armored vehicles, tear gas and batons to quell a hunger strike by protesters opposed to Turkey’s prison reforms.

Human rights groups and family members have said police fired their weapons at random and shot at protesters.
