From Times Wire Reports

The United Nations’ chief human rights official urged Beijing to let a U.N. investigator look into China’s “very widespread” use of torture.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, speaking after signing a cooperation agreement with China, also expressed concerns that “a number of countries” are using the war on terrorism as an excuse to crush legitimate peaceful dissent.

Activists abroad have accused Beijing of using the global anti-terrorism campaign to justify its effort to crush campaigns for autonomy or independence.
