Interim Plan to Use Crystal Cove Sites OKd
The California Coastal Commission Tuesday unanimously approved an interim plan for the historic enclave of houses at Crystal Cove State Park.
The project, which includes installing a sewer system, allows for temporary use of part of the area and some of the buildings while state parks officials craft a long-term plan for the picturesque coastal strip north of Laguna Beach.
“It retains what we’ve got while everyone plans what we’d like to have there,” commissioner Annette Rose said.
The commission, meeting in Los Angeles, approved the plan on a 7-0 vote after a 25-minute public hearing.
The plan calls for converting an art studio into an interpretive center, and five cottages into a lifeguard headquarters and employee residences. A small, unsafe part of the boardwalk would be closed, and a temporary path allowing handicapped access would be built. The 46 ramshackle cottages that dot the strip between Pacific Coast Highway and the ocean would be inspected and some would be repaired.
