Ventura County Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury’s bid to become the next U.S. attorney in Los Angeles has fallen short, the veteran prosecutor said Thursday.

Bradbury, 59, said he has been informed by the Bush administration that another candidate will be chosen as the top law enforcement official in Southern California.

Bradbury made the final list of candidates and was interviewed by a White House and Justice Department panel two weeks ago in Washington. But he said he had always considered himself a longshot. “I always thought someone from Los Angeles would get this job,” he said.

The position oversees federal prosecutions in seven California counties with 17 million residents--the most populous federal district in the nation.

Bradbury, district attorney since 1978, announced in September that he would not seek another term.
