William Randall, 80; Made Suntan Lotion, Personal Care Products

William B. Randall, 80, manufacturer of suntan lotion and other personal care products sold through upscale hotels and spas, died Nov. 2 of cancer at his Carlsbad, Calif., home.

Born in Philadelphia, Randall attended Rider College in Trenton, N.J., and served as an Army Air Forces navigator during World War II before beginning his career in sales.

In 1961, he became president of Sea & Ski Corp. and for the next eight years led such innovations in sun-care products as the plastic tube, offering sampler-size tubes to commercial airline passengers and advertising on mammoth billboards. He introduced wraparound sunglasses from the French Alps to American consumers when he started the Renauld of France sunglasses division for Sea & Ski.

Later he specialized in spa lotions and other items as president of La Costa Products, marketing through the Southern California spa of that name and through his innovative La Costa catalog. In 1989, he founded Randall International based in Carlsbad, providing personal care products for hotels and other institutions in the hospitality industry.
