All-Terrain Vehicles Recalled

A Minnesota company is recalling about 12,000 all-terrain vehicles because the rear wheels can lock, which could cause drivers to lose control and crash.

Polaris Industries Inc. of Medina, Minn., has received reports of seven incidents of loose screws in the transmission that caused the wheels to lock, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday. The reports include three accidents that resulted in broken bones, internal injuries, scrapes and bruises.

The recalled ATVs are the 2000, 2001 and 2002 model year “Xpedition 425” with 5-speed manual transmissions. The ATVs are either red or a metallic tan and have “Xpedition 425” and “Polaris” written on both sides.

Polaris ATVs with automatic transmissions and Xpedition 325 ATVs are not included in the recall.

Polaris dealers sold the recalled ATVs nationwide from February 1999 through October 2001 for about $6,300.

The government said owners should stop using the faulty ATVs and contact their local Polaris dealer to schedule free repair. People also can call Polaris Industries toll-free at (800) 765-2747 from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. EST Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to midnight on weekends.
