500 Teachers Gain National Honors, Davis Announces

At Santa Monica Boulevard Elementary School in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Gov. Gray Davis recognized teachers who have been certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

“This is the most rigorous standard by which a teacher can be recognized in California,” Davis said. “Becoming nationally board certified is like receiving a black belt in karate.”

More than 500 California teachers attained board certification this year, and half of them were from the Los Angeles Unified School District. Teachers must complete an intense, yearlong program that focuses on subject matter and classroom techniques.
