Lawyers in Illinois could soon have a new set of rules for courtroom conduct, deposition demeanor and client compassion.

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed a special committee on lawyer civility that will draft a code of conduct and a set of disciplinary guidelines for lawyers who engage in antics that some say is common in televised courtrooms.

Robert Clifford, a Chicago lawyer and member of Illinois’ civility committee, suggests a mentoring program to keep attorneys from becoming what they see on television.

“Take a look at TV shows where a shady, slimy lawyer is only involved in his self-interest,” Clifford said. “Some young lawyers see that and think that’s the way to be.”
