From Times Wire Reports

Pope John Paul II elevated four Europeans to sainthood, bringing to 456 the number of people he has canonized in his 23-year papacy.

The pontiff praised the spirituality of the four in a ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica, where their images were displayed on tapestries.

The four were: a 19th century French nun who founded a congregation dedicated to helping the young women pouring into cities during the Industrial Revolution; the Italian founder of the Oblates of St. Joseph; the Spanish founder of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary; and a Bavarian-born nun.
