Baxter to Pay Spanish Dialysis Patients

U.S. health-care company Baxter International Inc. said it agreed to pay $2.89 million to the families of 10 Spanish patients who died after using kidney dialysis treatment products from Baxter that have been blamed for the deaths of 51 people worldwide.

Each of the 10 families will receive about $289,000, Baxter spokeswoman Sally Benjamin Young said.

This month, Deerfield, Ill.-based Baxter determined that a fluid used in manufacturing the devices appeared to have played a role in the deaths of 51 people worldwide, 11 of whom were in Spain. The dialyzers filter toxins from the blood.

Baxter shares rose 64 cents, or 1.3%, to $50.16 in trading on the NYSE.
