Discipline the Students, Not the Schools

School officials in high schools and community colleges have their hands full. They not only have the responsibility of educating our youth but also must put up with school bullies and mischievous students who take their bad habits to school with them (“Man Sues Over Anti-Gay Taunts,” Nov. 27).

Why should school districts be liable for lawsuits while a handful of students get off the hook for going to school with intentions of disrupting the educational environment with taunts and childish games of harassment directed toward other students--instead of getting educated? Punishment and special education should be directed toward the handful of students who believe they are doing the school district a favor by making someone quit school.

Perhaps school officials should pin a note on every student’s shirt that reads: This is an educational institution and not a playground.
