A senior member of India’s main opposition party and seven others were killed when their private plane crashed in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, state officials said.
The aircraft carrying the Congress Party’s Madhavrao Scindia crashed about 155 miles southeast of New Delhi, said Rajendra Bhonwal, divisional commissioner of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur region. Scindia was deputy leader of his party in the lower house of Parliament.
Officials said it was cloudy when the plane burst into flames and crashed. Scindia, 57, a former federal minister, was en route to a political meeting in Uttar Pradesh.
