Jet’s Engine Catches Fire; No One Injured
Fire broke out in one engine on an American Trans Air airliner as it landed, but the flames were quickly extinguished, an ATA spokeswoman said Sunday. No one was injured.
Airport tower staff noticed smoke coming from the Boeing 727’s tail engine after Flight 478 arrived at Indianapolis International Airport late Saturday from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Passengers remained on the plane while the fire was put out, and the jet then taxied to a gate, an airport spokesman said.
The aircraft was one of six 727s that ATA plans to retire by the end of this month as the Indianapolis-based airline, the nation’s 10th-largest, modernizes its fleet.
