Public Library Refuses to Block Internet Porn

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

As libraries search for ways to prevent children from accessing pornography on the Internet, San Francisco has sided with free speech and decided to ban filters altogether.

San Francisco’s public libraries could lose about $20,000 in federal funds because of the Children’s Internet Protection Act, enacted in April, which requires such filters.

Libraries have until 2003 to install the necessary software. Meanwhile, the American Library Assn. and the American Civil Liberties Union have sued to overturn the law, saying it violates the 1st Amendment.
