Reputed Gang Leader Charged in Crime Spree

A federal grand jury has indicted a Costa Mesa man on murder, bank robbery, racketeering and assault charges in connection with a crime spree across California, according to an indictment unsealed Thursday.

Authorities believe that Anh The Duong, 26, is the ringleader of a gang that netted as much as $7.8 million from robbing jewelry stores, computer component manufacturers, supermarkets and banks. He is accused of murdering seven people during robberies.

Also charged in the indictment are Lisbio Couto, 22, of Huntington Beach; Ricky Vong, 26, of San Jose; Cuong Vuong, 32, of San Jose; Johnnie Tangha, 35, of Daly City; Sowin Chan, 23, of Santa Ana; Philip Garza, 22, of Santa Ana; Duc Dien Tran Nguyen, 31, of Garden Grove; Vu Nguyen, 32, of Orange; Vu Nguyen Vu, 25, of Mission Viejo; and Timothy Mukasa, 26, of Santa Ana.
