Promise Keepers Due in Anaheim for 2-Day Event

Promise Keepers, the international men’s movement, brings its conference to Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim on Oct. 19 and 20. Prayers for the nation will be said during the free conference. The event is expected to draw thousands of men for encouragement, accountability and solid biblical principles for becoming better husbands, fathers, friends and co-workers. * St. Mark Presbyterian Church will host a series of lectures beginning Sunday at 11 a.m. after regular services and continuing all month on issues surrounding domestic violence here and abroad. Series topics will include “Whose Problem Is It?” “Why Get the Courts Involved?” and “Anger Among Angels: Anger, Violence and Spirituality.” Guest speakers will include judges, educators, counselors and other experts. * Mariners Church in Irvine has added a third service on Sunday mornings, with demand up since the terrorism of Sept. 11. * The Center for Universal Truth in Mission Viejo will host a prayer vigil today in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 tragedies. Meditation and music will also be featured. * The Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council will host an interfaith luncheon for congregations, clubs, youth groups, business leaders and other community members at noon Wednesday in Corona del Mar. * Rabbi Michael Mayersohn of Temple Beth David in Westminster will lead the first “Tot Shabbat” of the year at 9 a.m. Friday. Tot Shabbat is a Sabbath service for 2- to 6-year-olds. The celebration will feature songs, stories, prayers and a parade in the sanctuary with the Torah. Also, “Torah Talk” with Gina Lewald-Fass, director of education for lifelong learning, will be held monthly from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning Thursday. Participants are welcome to bring lunch. * Stonecroft Ministries will host its “California Adventures” regional conference Friday through Sunday in Irvine. Friday highlights will include a luncheon address by actress Jeannette Clift George and a dinner concert with address by minister and author Stuart Briscoe. Saturday events will include a women’s luncheon fashion show, and men’s luncheon with address by Orange County pastor and author Lee Strobel, and dinner speaker Jim Horsley, an author and former Navy Blue Angel flier. * Catholic Charities of Orange County will celebrate its 25th anniversary Oct. 13 with an open house, with refreshments, from 1 to 5 p.m. Children’s activities will include a bounce house, clowns and face-painting. * The American Jewish Committee will host a private showing of an exhibition, “The Holy Land: David Roberts, Dead Sea Scrolls, House of David Inscription,” Oct. 13 at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana. Dinner will be served. Space is limited. The cost is $75. (949) 660-8525.

A private tour of the exhibition will also be held by the Jewish Federation of Orange County Women’s Division at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5. Luncheon is included, followed by a talk by Marilyn J. Lundberg, associate director of the Western Semitic Resource Center at USC, who has developed one of the most extensive archives of ancient manuscripts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and Hebrew texts from the biblical period. * The Red Mass, a special Mass for judges and lawyers that had its beginnings nearly 800 years ago, will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Oct.15 at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange. Bishop Tod D. Brown will preside at the liturgy--the Mass for Peace and Justice--which will be followed by a dinner and reception. Guest homilist will be Bishop Joseph McGrath of the Diocese of San Jose. The invitation to attend is extended to all members of the community, especially those in the legal community and their families. In England, the tradition began about 1310, when the entire bench and bar attended the Red Mass at the opening of each term of the court. The priests and judges wore red robes to the celebration. Music

* A “Hallelujah! for Hospice” benefit concert, featuring the Michael Skidgel Singers, will be held Oct. 13 at the St. Joseph Center in Orange. The program will range from Broadway show tunes to patriotic songs. The concert will help raise community awareness of the care provided to terminally ill patients by the St. Joseph Hospice. Proceeds will support special services for hospice patients. Tickets are $15 and tax-deductible. St. Joseph Hospice is part of St. Jude, St. Joseph and Mission hospitals, as well as Children’s Hospital of Orange County and the St. Joseph Health System.
