Davis OKs $8 Billion to Aid Drought Area
Gov. Gray Davis signed an $8-billion relief package for Modoc and Siskiyou counties, in the drought-stricken Klamath River basin of Northern California.
The region is suffering water shortages from reductions made by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to protect endangered species of fish.
The package provides $2.5 million for families, 150 six-month public service jobs and crisis counseling. Among other allocations, it gives $3 million to an irrigation district and $1.2 million for water quality improvements and a community youth center in Tulelake.
