Military Base Schools Outpace Public Facilities

Students at schools on military bases score higher on achievement tests than their counterparts at civilian schools, researchers say, citing higher per-pupil funding, better teacher training and more flexibility for administrators.

The Vanderbilt University study, being released today, also said the gap between test scores of white and minority students at base schools was more narrow than at public schools.

Also, severe discipline problems are almost nonexistent at base schools, according to the researchers, who acknowledge that many military children grow up in households where discipline is stressed.
