A former deputy coroner and a photographer were convicted Tuesday of posing bodies in a morgue with sheet music, a key, an apple and other objects before taking pictures for an artistic project portraying life and death.

Commercial photographer Thomas Condon, 29, was found guilty of eight counts of abuse of a corpse. Former deputy coroner Jonathan Tobias, 31, was convicted of two counts. Each count is punishable by up to a year in prison.

Defense attorneys said they would appeal. Condon and Tobias would not comment after the trial.

Prosecutors said Tobias allowed Condon access to the morgue and the photographer unzipped body bags and posed corpses between August 2000 and January.

A film processor contacted police when he saw the photos.
