Bombs and Headlines Can Sometimes Miss

Share

Re “Errant Bomb Hits Housing Row in Kabul,” Oct. 14: I am appalled but not shocked by your choice of headlines. Once again the American press is consumed by self-flagellation.

Rather than praise for the military’s enormous effort to spare all injury to noncombatants, your headlines emphasize civilian casualties. These events are tragically unavoidable, as our forces must initially fight the enemy from a distance to minimize our own casualties. We must remember that these evil thugs have pledged themselves to destroy our society, and innocent civilians are their primary target.

For the past decade, the press has been intent on instilling feelings of guilt and self-reproach into our society. However, when the danger is so clear, the threat to our way of life so evident and the need for national resolve so necessary, I find your headline quite despicable.

Why are we still dropping bombs? I thought the U.S. was dropping bombs on Afghanistan in order to get Osama bin Laden. Now that the Taliban has offered to hand him over, why are we continuing to bomb the rubble and kill civilians? Do we have another agenda? The whole world is watching!
