The Times failed to note that Bill Whalen (“The Political Fortunes of Bush and Davis Just Switched Places,” Commentary, Oct. 17) was for six years Gov. Pete Wilson’s chief speech writer and public affairs director. Whalen himself should own up to the fact that the energy crisis to which Gov. Gray Davis responded forcefully was largely created by the fatally flawed deregulation policies of the Wilson administration.
The governor has emphatically stated that President Bush is the commander in chief and has the governor’s--and all of California’s--full support. Gov. Davis is doing exactly what he should be doing: ensuring the security of vital facilities, utilizing state resources to increase airport security and upping security measures against bioterrorism.
