MILITARY FRONT
Top administration officials warned that the military campaign in Afghanistan could extend well through spring, forcing U.S. troops to fight through winter weather. U.S. warplanes on Sunday launched their closest strikes yet to Taliban troops near the front line north of Kabul, the Afghan capital.
ANTHRAX
A postal worker in the nation’s capital was in “serious but stable” condition after being diagnosed with inhalation anthrax, which is often fatal. Congressional leaders, meanwhile, said they will open the Capitol today but will keep surrounding offices closed pending tests for anthrax spores.
DIPLOMACY
* President Bush and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin continued their vocal disagreement over the 1972 Antiballistic Missile Treaty, which Bush is threatening to abandon.
* Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said the Bush administration was in discussions with the Northern Alliance about whether the rebels should take over Kabul and another Taliban-held city, Mazar-i-Sharif, near the border with Uzbekistan.
