Mass Memorial Service Is Scheduled at Ruins
A memorial service for family members of those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center has been scheduled for Sunday at the ground zero ruins.
New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said that around-the-clock cleanup operations at the site would be suspended during the interdenominational service.
Hijacked jetliners slammed into the trade center towers, toppling them in a mountain of debris. About 5,000 people are dead and missing. Fewer than 10% of the bodies have been recovered.
Giuliani said families of the those killed have told him it was “very comforting, in a strange way, to actually be there and see the place where their loved one died, and maybe is buried.”
