New Rioting Erupts in Belfast, Injuring Three
Roman Catholics and Protestants pelted one another with homemade grenades in Belfast, injuring two girls, police and residents said. A man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
More than 100 Catholics and 50 Protestants had to be driven apart by police in riot gear during the confrontation in the Limestone Road area of North Belfast, an area plagued by rioting in recent months.
The violence came amid mounting speculation that the Irish Republican Army was planning to offer a disarmament gesture to ease the crisis facing Northern Ireland’s Catholic-Protestant government.
