Weekend Violence Leaves at Least 30 Dead
Rebels and paramilitary forces killed at least 30 people over the weekend, Colombian officials said.
In one attack, paramilitary gunmen killed 10 peasants in Alejandria, 117 miles northwest of Bogota, the capital. The gunmen accused the peasants of collaborating with Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, guerrillas, an army spokesman said.
The army accused the FARC of three attacks over the weekend.
In La Guajira province, FARC rebels bombed a gas pipeline, killing four brothers aged 5 to 9, and killed six people in a village, the army said. In Valle del Cauca province, rebels shot five people to death, the army said.
Meanwhile, in the northwestern town of Penol, a bomb ripped through an apartment building, killing five. Police blamed that attack on National Liberation Army rebels.
