FAA Seeks to Fine America West Again

The Federal Aviation Administration proposed again fining America West Airlines, this time for $667,050, for alleged aircraft-maintenance lapses between 1997 and 2000.

Previously, the Phoenix-based carrier paid a $2.5-million fine as part of a settlement it reached with the FAA, which called for a major overhaul of America West’s maintenance and flight operations. The airline also came under heightened oversight by the agency.

In light of those actions, America West said it’s now “in full compliance” with FAA regulations and plans to fight the latest proposed fines.

In proposing the penalties, the FAA alleged that America West flew many aircraft with problems including improper bolts and planes that hadn’t been modified as directed.

Shares of America West Holdings Corp., the airline’s parent firm, rose 11 cents to $2.28 on the NYSE.
