Navy Recovers 8 of 9 Bodies on Ehime Maru
Divers have recovered eight of the nine bodies of Japanese men and boys killed when a U.S. submarine sank their fishing boat.
Going to unprecedented lengths to make amends to Japan, the Navy has devoted more than $60 million to recovering the bodies of those killed.
The Greeneville ripped through the Ehime Maru’s hull on Feb. 9 as the nuclear-powered sub demonstrated a surfacing drill off Oahu.
The collision outraged the victims’ families. The Navy quickly apologized and promised to retrieve the bodies. Never before has the Navy recovered a ship the size of the 830-ton Ehime Maru from so great a depth: 2,000 feet.
