President Pledges to Work to End Violence

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo vowed to end a national spiral of violence, and his government pledged to deal with undisciplined soldiers after troops massacred hundreds of villagers in an apparent reprisal.
The blood bath in the central state of Benue, seemingly in revenge for the deaths of 19 soldiers, was the latest in a series of violent outbreaks, many ethnically or religiously motivated, since Obasanjo came to power in 1999.
