Red Cross Will End Sept. 11 Fund-Raising
Saying it had received more money than it knew what to do with for now, the American Red Cross said it would stop seeking donations for its Sept. 11 relief fund beginning today.
Charity officials reported pledges totaling $547 million, enough to meet attack victims’ needs for at least a year. About $300 million has been spent or earmarked for people directly affected by the hijack attacks that left nearly 4,800 people dead or missing.
Harold Decker, the organization’s interim chief executive, said the Red Cross has made significant progress in distributing funds.
Decker took over as chief executive from Bernadine Healy, who said Friday she was forced out after clashing with the board over the relief fund and other matters.
