Detroit Works to Stop ‘Devil’s Night’ Arsons

About 30,000 volunteers patrolled Detroit’s streets to try to stamp out the annual “Devil’s Night” arson spree on abandoned homes and cars on Halloween eve, officials said.
In recent years, bands of orange-capped volunteers, emergency curfews and restrictions on sales of gasoline have curtailed the number of fires across the city.
The arson spree on “Devil’s Night” began in 1983. At its worst, in 1984, about 300 fires were ignited in the city on Devil’s Night, symbolizing Detroit’s urban decay.
