Explosive Possibilities

“Suitcase Bomb Plutonium” (editorial, Aug. 23) points out that Russian nuclear weapons constitute the biggest national security threat at present. An unmentioned danger comes from the weapons that remain on hair-trigger alert by both the U.S. and Russia. Over the years there have been many false alarms on both sides. The situation is more dangerous than ever because the poor condition of Russian detection systems makes an error more likely.
The Orange County Alliance for Global Nuclear Disarmament has been urging our congressional representatives to work actively to end this potentially tragic Cold War situation. The monetary cost is low and the potential benefit is priceless.
