Quebec Quandary

Sebastien Dhavernas, in calling for the mandated dubbing of movies, wins the year’s prize for the most disingenuous nonsense (“In Quebec, Movies Face a French Knot,” by Lionel Perron, Aug. 19). While I understand Dhavernas’ desire to protect jobs in his province, labeling it “cultural protection” is both dishonest and misleading; it implies that this practice preserves art, when in fact it does the opposite.

Dubbing is an inferior practice that ruins films by degrading both the sound and the performance aspects of a film; the alternate is the artistically superior one of using the original track with subtitles.

Dhavernas is protecting jobs for himself and his colleagues, but he pretends that this is about culture.
