From Times Staff Reports

People in parts of three Southern California counties may soon notice a musty taste and odor in their water, but experts said Wednesday that there is no health hazard.

Officials from the Metropolitan Water District and state Department of Water Resources said the unpleasant taste is caused by an “especially large and persistent algal bloom” in part of the California Aqueduct near the San Bernardino Mountains.

Parts of eastern Los Angeles, western Riverside and western San Bernardino counties will be affected, said Jill T. Wicke, the district’s manager of water systems operations.

Water department workers began applying copper sulfate Wednesday to kill and help prevent the spread of the algae, Wicke said. The taste and odor may last at least a week, she said.
