Lynn Bielefelt, 51; Led Choirs

Lynn Bielefelt, 51, a choral music professor at USC and formerly of Cal State Long Beach who directed several noted church and youth choirs in Southern California, died of breast cancer Sept. 1 in Los Angeles.

At USC’s Thornton School of Music, where she earned her doctorate and taught for two years, Bielefelt directed the USC Thornton Concert Choir.

She also had been director of highly respected choirs at the First United Methodist Church in Glendale and St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles.

As a professor at Cal State Long Beach for 11 years, Bielefelt taught vocal jazz and other choral techniques and led the school’s Chamber Singers, Women’s Choir, Forty-Niner Choir and Opera Workshop.

She also was known for her orchestral conducting and had directed such groups as the Marymount Palos Verdes Symphony Orchestra, Cal State Long Beach Symphony and Los Angeles Bach Ensemble.

Bielefelt had been a guest conductor of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and others throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

She is survived by her parents, Robert and Connie Bielefelt; and a brother, Bruce.
