GOP Cancels Fall Convention
The California Republican Party announced Thursday the cancellation of its annual fall convention, which was scheduled to begin today in Los Angeles.
“Now is not the time for politics, but a time for rebuilding and reflection,” said party Chairman Shawn Steel.
The three-day gathering was expected to draw as many as 1,500 party activists. The cancellation delayed a fight over reorganizing the party’s operations and denied loyalists their first chance to hear from all three potential candidates for governor: Secretary of State Bill Jones, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and investment banker Bill Simon Jr.
Rather than reschedule the gathering, spokesman Rob Stutzman said the party’s 100-member executive committee will likely convene sometime in the next few weeks to satisfy party bylaws requiring a fall convention.
