From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The City Council has backed a plan to demolish the 50-year-old public library to make way for a larger, modern facility because of overcrowding.

Council members late Wednesday voted unanimously to replace the city library with a 27,000-square-foot building, nearly twice the size of the existing facility.

The council directed city staff to seek qualified architectural firms to bid on the project. The city hopes to finance construction by working with the San Marino Unified School District to draft an application to the state government for grant funds.

City Librarian Carolyn Crain said backers hope to obtain funding from Proposition 14, a $350-million bond issue approved by California voters in March 2000, as well as from private donations. The new library is expected to cost $8.5 million.
