Rebels Kill 8 Farmers in Aceh, Police Say

Indonesian police said at least eight farmers were shot to death in Aceh, just days after Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri visited the restive province appealing for peace.

Aceh police spokesman Sad Harunantyo said separatist rebels were behind the killings in Singkel district.

“All of the victims were farmers from Java--they were lined up by the rebels and shot,” Harunantyo said by telephone from Banda Aceh, the provincial capital, adding that four people escaped the shooting and later reported the incident to a local security post.
