Re “Playa Vista Foe Chains Herself to Gehry’s Door,” Sept. 6: I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read Frank Gehry’s statement that there are numerous other wetlands in Southern California more deserving of preservation than Ballona. My neighborhood association and seven others in Santa Monica wrote a long letter to Gehry, asking him to “reconsider his involvement with Playa Vista” due to the critical role the Ballona ecosystem plays for migratory birds and the marine life of Santa Monica Bay.

Los Angeles County has lost the most wetlands to development of any Southern California county, according to the California Coastal Conservancy, a whopping 93%! We need the leadership of people like Gehry to help us save the last 1,100-acre remnant of the once-vast Ballona Wetlands.

Valerie Sklarevsky’s concerns are reversed--she should have chained herself to a bush in Playa Vista and shouted, “Look out, Playa, Frank Gehry is coming.” He will not only help develop the area, but his portion of the project will be covered with inefficient, hard-to-construct and expensive structures that have outrageousness as their only claim to fame.

Good luck, Valerie, and goodbye, Playa Vista.
