Heart Surgeon’s Ashes Buried in Hometown

The ashes of pioneering heart surgeon Dr. Christiaan Neethling Barnard, 78, who died Sept. 2, were buried in a churchyard in Beaufort West, the small South African town where he was born.
Family members scattered red roses and handfuls of earth below the tombstone, which bore the inscription: “I came back home,” and Barnard’s signature.
